The Hubble Space Telescope: a long strange trip

Most people think of the Hubble Space Telescope as something relatively new. Space telescopes had been discussed by German astronomers as early as the 1920s. In the early 1960s, not long after the establishment of NASA, a space based telescope was proposed by a study group as a serious, long-term goal.
